Christmas in July is a special campaign from Operation Gratitude campaign, in partnership with CSX’s community investment program, Pride in Service, which delivers a much-needed morale boost to deployed troops serving overseas. As part of this campaign, volunteers will assemble 10,000 care packages that include handwritten letters of appreciation from grateful Americans, Handmade with Love items, single-serve snacks, candy, and hygiene and comfort items. The campaign engages volunteers across the country to take part in tangible actions of gratitude for our nation’s military, such as the annual Red, White and Blue Paracord Competition!
The military tradition of Christmas in July began in 1944 when the US Postal Service teamed up with officials from the U.S. Army and Navy and greeting card companies, to encourage the public to send an early shipment of holiday gifts and cards to overseas service members during World War II. The intention was to diffuse the typical holiday mailing rush and boost troop morale. The event has since taken hold as an annual festivity in many military communities as a way for families to celebrate with service members who are deployed during the traditional holiday celebration period. Our care packages are intended to deliver encouragement to troops, regardless of religious affiliation.
