Think a car retailer can’t play a role in sustaining the fight against COVID-19? Think again. CarMax, the nation’s largest retailer of used cars has teamed up with Operation Gratitude to deliver 3,500 care packages to healthcare heroes on the frontlines of the pandemic across Texas, California, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. These frontline responders continue to tirelessly serve our communities with courage and resolve and each of the packages assembled for them contain individual items like coffee, single-serve snacks, candy, hygiene, comfort items, and handwritten letters of appreciation from grateful Americans.

“Few things have shaken the country and the world as greatly as COVID-19. It has impacted every life in some way or another; however, perhaps its greatest enduring effect is on those who are courageously waging a war against it in every hospital in the land. Every emergency room and ICU has been on a war footing for nearly a year. Physical exhaustion, stress and ever-longer working hours have had their adverse effects on the frontline healthcare workers”, shared Dr. Michael J. Opatowsky, Associate Clinical Professor, Baylor Scott and White Health Care System, Dallas. “When least expected, and needed most, care packages from Operation Gratitude arrive at these hospitals to not only provide a quick and much needed nutritional break, but to provide an uplifting reminder that there are many in our country that are grateful for what we do and have joined forces to help us regain our strength and resolve to fight this aggressor.”

Lynn Bohne, Director of the Baylor Scott & White Foundation, shared the profound impact this delivery had for her team of healthcare heroes in Dallas: “Thank you for your thoughtfulness and support of our frontline workers. Your gift will brighten our team’s day for sure. We truly appreciate everything your company does to help and inspire those who help us every day.”

The deliveries are part of Operation Gratitude’s support for COVID-19 Frontline Responders, which has positively impacted more than 500,000 doctors and nurses in hospitals, police officers, firefighters, and EMTs, and National Guardsmen across the U.S since March 2020.

The Operation Gratitude community of volunteers, including CarMax employees, across the nation has been writing letters of gratitude, knitting and crocheting handmade items, hosting virtual collection drives for care packages, and making paracord bracelets. Leslie Parpart, community relations director at CarMax, shared: “Volunteering to serve the community is an important part of CarMax’s culture. We are even more grateful for our partnership with Operation Gratitude as we faced the pandemic. The organization’s commitment to those who serve our country and ability to pivot to meet changing needs has enabled us to find new ways to make a difference in the communities where we live and work.”
