Letter Screening Program

Thank you for your interest in helping Operation Gratitude screen the 500,000+ letters and cards we receive every year.

We need trained Letter Screeners to assist us — we hope you will join us!

Here are some FAQs about our Letter Screening Program

Question: How do I become a Letter Screener?
Answer: You must live close enough to “The FOB” in Chatsworth to take our Letter Screener class, and to pick up and drop off the letters. Each Letter Screener will attend an approximately 25 minute instruction that will teach you how to screen and categorize the letters. Please contact us to set-up an appointment. Send an email to info@operationgratitude.com and put “Letter Screening Team” in the subject line.

Question: When and where are Letter Screener classes available?
Answer: We will make every effort to accommodate you. We organize group classes at The FOB a few times a year (which will be listed on the website here: Volunteer Schedule). We can also provide group or one-on-one training at The FOB during our normal operating hours (Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm), or we can set up an appointment to meet off-site at your and our convenience.

Question: How many letters am I required to read?
Answer: There is no set requirement. You can read the letters at your own pace, and as often as you have the time. Our only requirement is that you devote concentrated time to screen the letters, without distractions or other obligations at that time.

Question: How old do I have to be?
Answer: We prefer that Letter Screeners be at least 18 years old.

Question: Can I receive Community Service Credit (“CSC”) for reading letters at home?
Answer: Letters screened at home do not qualify for Community Service Credit. If you are screening letters at our facility, we do offer CSC for the total number of hours you are at The FOB.

Question: Can my church/club, read letters at our meeting place when we get together?
Answer: Yes! First, everyone in the group must be trained by our Operation Gratitude Letter Screening Specialist. For large groups of 20 or more, we might be able to go to your site to conduct the training, or we can host your group’s training at our facility, The FOB, in Chatsworth, CA.

More questions? Please send an email to info@operationgratitude.com with “Letter Screening Team” in the subject line.

We will get back to you ASAP.
