Frequently Asked Questions

As Operation Gratitude evolves into our new community-powered model, we understand this transition may bring questions. Below are answers to help you understand what’s ahead as we create the future of gratitude together, one community at a time.

We’re here to support you through this transition—please email us at info@operationgratitude.com with any additional questions.

Operation Gratitude’s Future

No, Operation Gratitude is not closing. We’re transitioning to a new community-powered model that will allow us to expand our reach and impact. Instead of operating from a single warehouse, we’ll be empowering communities nationwide to create their own meaningful expressions of gratitude for Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders.

Care packages remain a meaningful way to say thank you—we’re just changing how they’re created. Instead of assembly at our California facility, we’re empowering communities nationwide to create their own care package projects for local Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders.

Our Community Engagement Resource Hub, launching in 2026, will provide the tools and guidance to organize care package projects, letter-writing campaigns, or any other meaningful expressions of gratitude in your community.

We are transitioning away from a centralized warehouse model and into a new, community-powered future where volunteers, local leaders, and generous donors like you will bring our mission to life in towns and cities across the country.

Here’s what won’t change: our mission to say thank you to those who serve. If anything, this next chapter lets us fulfill that mission more personally, more directly, and on a much larger scale.

With your support, we will be able to: equip individuals and groups with the tools they need to organize local gratitude projects, launch our Grassroots Grantmaking Program to fund community-led appreciation efforts, and share powerful stories that honor service and inspire connection through our Storytelling and Legacy Keeper Initiative.

You helped build this moment. Now we’re inviting you to help grow it. With your continued generosity, we can bring the spirit of Operation Gratitude to every zip code in the country.

Absolutely not. Operation Gratitude is financially strong and here to stay. This change is not a response to financial instability – it’s a strategic decision to ensure the long-term, sustainability and growth of our mission.

For years, volunteers across the country have asked how they can do what we do in California in their own communities. This transition is our answer. As our warehouse lease ends in 2026, we’re seizing this moment to shift from a centralized model to a nationwide, community-centric approach – one that allows us to engage more volunteers, steward donor dollars more effectively, and reach more of those who serve.

We’re not winding down – we’re expanding the mission and empowering more people to say “thank you” in meaningful, local ways.

Absolutely not.  Operation Gratitude is financially strong and here to stay.

How the new model works

Instead of traveling to a central warehouse in California, volunteers will be able to:

  • Join local care package assembly events in cities nationwide
  • Support Veterans and First Responders through hands-on projects and/or in-person deliveries
  • Write letters of appreciation and send encouragement from anywhere
  • Organize community-led initiatives with guidance from our online hub

Cities and regions where you can get involved

Through the Community Engagement Resource Hub, you’ll be able to find opportunities in locations like:

  • Dallas, Texas – local volunteer projects for Service Members and First Responders
  • Connecticut – community-led care package and letter-writing campaigns
  • San Diego, California – events and projects supporting deployed troops and Veterans
  • And many more locations nationwide

No matter where you live, you’ll be able to connect to meaningful ways of giving back.

Volunteering

Your Assembly Day will proceed as planned. We remain committed to fulfilling all scheduled and confirmed volunteer opportunities during this transition period.

There are many exciting ways to stay involved! You can apply for grants to fund your own local gratitude projects, use our Resource Hub tools to organize community events, participate in our “Operation Gratitude in Action” Facebook group, and help us collect and share stories for our Legacy Keeper Initiative. As we launch our new programs, we’ll also need volunteers to help other communities get started with their own initiatives.

Absolutely! Letter-writing remains one of the most powerful ways to express gratitude to Service Members. Our Community Engagement Resource Hub will include templates, guidelines, and best practices to help you organize letter-writing campaigns in your community, school, or organization. We’ll also provide guidance on how to connect with local military units and ensure your letters reach those who need them most.

We’ll continue issuing community service hours for all contributions received at our headquarters through August 31, 2025.

After this date, while we won’t provide service hours directly, many local projects supported through our new model may qualify for recognition through schools, employers, or civic programs.

Care Packages & Donations

Although we’re no longer accepting in-kind donations at our California warehouse, we can connect you with local organizations in your community through our resources. When our Community Engagement Resource Hub launches in 2026, you’ll find opportunities online to contribute to local gratitude initiatives.

We’re not ending Handmade with Love—we’re evolving it. While we’ll no longer be accepting handmade items at our California warehouse after August 31st, we encourage our talented volunteers to continue crafting through local community initiatives. Our new Community Engagement Resource Hub, launching in 2026, will provide guidance on how to organize and deliver local handmade projects. You can also connect with fellow crafters in our “Operation Gratitude in Action” Facebook group.

Yes! We are continuing to accept Handmade with Love donations through August 31st, 2025. After that date, we’ll help connect you with local opportunities to share your handmade items through community initiatives supported by our Resource Hub and grants program. Please click here to be directed to our product donation form.

We are continuing to accept all donations and shipments through August 31st, 2025, so any prepaid shipping labels or postage can still be used until that date. For Give Box program participants with unused prepaid labels, you can continue using them to send donations through August 31st. If you’re unable to use your Give Box labels by that date, please contact Give Back Box directly for assistance at 310-954-2003 or Info@givebackbox.com.

New Programs & Partnerships

This accessible platform, launching in 2026, will provide comprehensive resources for anyone seeking to organize meaningful acts of gratitude in their community.

The hub will include:

  • Step-by-step toolkits and planning guides
  • Templates for care packages and letter-writing initiatives
  • Access to our Grassroots Grantmaking Program
  • Resources for corporate, community, and youth-led programs

Whether you’re organizing a single event or establishing ongoing gratitude traditions, this hub will provide everything needed to bring the spirit of Operation Gratitude to your neighborhood.

Our Grassroots Grantmaking Program is currently in development. Grant applications will open in 2026 through the Community Engagement Resource Hub, supporting community-led projects aligned with our mission to express gratitude to those who serve.

We’ll share detailed information about eligibility criteria, application processes, and funding guidelines as we approach the launch.

We’re excited to deepen our relationships with organizations like National Charity League chapters, churches, schools, and community groups. Instead of coordinating large shipments to our warehouse, we’ll provide you with resources, templates, and potential grant funding to organize meaningful gratitude projects directly in your community. This allows your organization to build lasting relationships with local Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders while creating more flexible volunteer opportunities for your members.

This transition is designed to reach even more Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders through community-driven initiatives. Instead of care packages coming from one central location, recipients will receive support directly from their local communities—creating stronger, more personal connections. Local groups will be able to respond more quickly to specific needs and build lasting relationships with those they’re supporting.

Corporate Engagement

Our corporate engagement is transforming in two key ways

A. From event production to community partnership – Our Grassroots Grantmaking Program will enable companies to fund local gratitude initiatives across the country, creating targeted community impact while contributing to a nationwide movement of appreciation.

B. Empowering employee engagement at the local level – Companies can continue hosting care package events or supporting local service communities with our guidance. Instead of routing through centralized operations, we’ll provide toolkits, resources, and local connections enabling direct impact in your company’s own community, making employee engagement more personal and meaningful.

Absolutely. Companies with existing care package programs will continue receiving our support throughout this transition period as we honor all current partnerships and commitments.

Looking ahead, we’ll provide advisory services that help companies create authentic employee engagement programs connecting their teams with local Service Members and First Responders.

Our mission continues

Our mission remains unchanged: to say “Thank You” to our Military and First Responder communities, and to honor their service by creating opportunities for all Americans to express gratitude.

As we transition to a community-powered organization, we’re excited to empower local leaders and volunteers across the nation to create meaningful expressions of gratitude in their own communities.

Together, we’re creating the future of gratitude—one community at a time.
